Williamson "Wick" Murray (November 23, 1941 – August 1, 2023) was a distinguished American historian and author, known for his significant contributions to the field of history and strategic studies.


Educational Journey and Military Service

Murray commenced his educational journey at Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts, completing his secondary education in 1959. Later, he pursued his undergraduate studies at Yale University, graduating with honors in history in 1963. Following his undergraduate studies, Murray dedicated five years to serving in the United States Air Force as an officer. During his service, he was stationed in Southeast Asia with the 314th Tactical Airlift Wing, where he operated C-130s. After his military service, he returned to Yale University as a graduate student in the Department of History, eventually earning his Ph.D. in military-diplomatic history in 1974.


Academic and Professional Career

Post his doctoral studies, Murray delved into the academic world and taught at Yale University's history department for two years. In 1977, he joined Ohio State University as a military and diplomatic historian, marking the beginning of a notable career. During his tenure, he received the Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award in 1987, recognizing his exceptional teaching skills. Over the years, he shared his knowledge at various esteemed institutions including the United States Air War College, the United States Military Academy, and the Naval War College.
