Sheila Yvette Oliver: Pioneering American Politician
Sheila Yvette Oliver (July 14, 1952 – August 1, 2023) was a notable American politician, belonging to the Democratic Party. She made history as the first Black woman to hold the position of lieutenant governor in New Jersey. Additionally, she was the first woman of color to be elected to a statewide office in the state.
Early Life and Education
Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Oliver completed her high school education at Weequahic High School in 1970. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Lincoln University, graduating cum laude with a B.A. in sociology in 1974. Furthering her education, she earned an MSW from Columbia University in community organization, planning, and administration in 1976. In recognition of her achievements, Lincoln University awarded her an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters on May 6, 2018.
Early Career and Political Involvement
Prior to her political career, Oliver engaged in both the public and private sectors. She notably served as the executive director of The Leaguers, Inc., a prominent non-profit social services organization in northern New Jersey. Oliver's journey into public service began in the 1990s when she served on the Board of Education of the East Orange School District. Later, she represented the 34th legislative district in the New Jersey General Assembly, becoming the Speaker of the Assembly from 2010 to 2014. During her tenure, she backed various reforms and policies, making her a prominent figure in New Jersey politics.
Trailblazing Political Achievements
In 2017, Oliver was chosen as the running mate for Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Murphy. After a successful campaign, they were elected, and Oliver was sworn in as the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey on January 16, 2018. During her time in office, she also held the position of Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. Oliver made history by breaking barriers and being a strong advocate for her community.
Death and Legacy
On July 31, 2023, Oliver experienced a medical event and was hospitalized. Tragically, she passed away on August 1, 2023, at the age of 71. Her death was a significant loss for the state of New Jersey, and Governor Murphy paid tribute to her exceptional contributions. Sheila Yvette Oliver's legacy lives on, inspiring generations and leaving an indelible mark on the political landscape of New Jersey.
