Vincent J. Speranza: A WWII American Hero
Vincent J. Speranza (March 23, 1925 – August 2, 2023) was an American private who served valiantly in the United States Army during World War II.
Early Years
Vincent was born on March 23, 1925, in the vibrant neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan, New York. Raised in a large Italian family during the challenging times of the Great Depression, he spent his youth on Staten Island with three brothers and four sisters. He completed his high school education in January 1943 and proceeded to enroll at the City College of New York.
Answering the Call to Serve
In 1943, immediately after high school, Vincent J. Speranza answered the call to duty by enlisting in the United States Army. Eager to join at the young age of 16, he patiently waited until he turned 18 to serve his country. Vincent was sent to various military training centers before becoming part of the Parachute Infantry, showcasing his dedication and determination to contribute to the war effort.
A Soldier's Journey
Vincent served overseas with Company H, 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. His journey took him through the landscapes of Scotland, England, Belgium, and finally, France. He bravely engaged in the Battle of the Bulge, showcasing incredible courage during the Siege of Bastogne, where he operated a machine gun from a forward position outside the town. Following the war's conclusion, Vincent continued to impact lives as a teacher at Curtis High School in New York. He married Iva Leftwich in 1948, and together they raised a son and two daughters. Vincent's commitment to preserving the memories of World War II was demonstrated through various avenues, including writing his book titled NUTS!: A 101st Airborne Division Machine Gunner at Bastogne in 2014.

He passed away on August 2, 2023, at Springfield Memorial Hospital, leaving a legacy of courage and resilience.
