Nitin Chandrakant Desai (9 August 1965 – 2 August 2023) was an esteemed Indian art director, production designer, film and television producer, celebrated for his remarkable contributions to the film industry. He was most renowned for his exceptional work in Marathi and Hindi films, leaving an indelible mark on iconic movies and cultural festivals.
Early Life and Education
Nitin Chandrakant Desai was born on 9 August 1965, hailing from Mulund, Bombay, Maharashtra. He received his education at Wamanrao Muranjan High School in Mulund, where he studied in Marathi Medium. Intrigued by the world of art, he pursued photography at the J.J. School of Art and L.S.Raheja School of Arts in Mumbai, setting the stage for his cinematic journey.
Career Highlights
Desai embarked on his career in Mumbai's Film City Studios in May 1987, transitioning from still photography to the captivating realm of art direction. His career took off under the mentorship of renowned art director, Nitish Roy. Notable early works include being a part of the team for the TV serial Tamas (1987) and working on TV series like Kabir and Chanakya.
His remarkable journey in the world of films began with Adhikari Brothers's Bhookamp in 1993. However, it was the period film 1942: A Love Story in 1994 directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra that propelled him into the limelight. Desai's artistic prowess graced a multitude of films including Parinda, Khamoshi, Maachis, Baadshah, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Raju Chacha, and international projects like Salaam Bombay!, Amok, Jungle Book, Kama Sutra, and many more.
Desai's legacy was also marked by his role as a film producer. He co-founded Chandrakant Productions, producing the devotional film Desh Devi in 2002. A significant milestone was the establishment of ND Studios in 2005, spanning over 52 acres at Karjat, Navi Mumbai. The studio hosted various films and reality shows, adding a valuable contribution to the industry.
In Marathi cinema, he made significant contributions, producing a biopic titled Balgandharva and a reality TV show Marathi Paul Padte Pudhe, providing a platform for emerging talents.
Passing and Legacy
Sadly, on 2 August 2023, Nitin Chandrakant Desai passed away by suicide in Karjat, Maharashtra at the age of 57. His remarkable journey as a pioneering art director, production designer, and film and television producer continues to inspire the creative community. Desai's influence on the world of cinema remains a testament to his passion and dedication to the arts.
