Laurence Deonna: A Trailblazing Swiss Journalist and Advocate for Peace

Laurence Deonna, a remarkable Swiss journalist, writer, and photographer, made significant contributions in the field of journalism, particularly as a celebrated war reporter in the Middle East during the late 1960s. Her dedication to promoting international understanding and advocating for the betterment of women's status earned her prestigious accolades, leaving an indelible mark on the world.

Early Life and Education

Laurence Deonna was born on 29 January 1937 in Geneva. She was the daughter of the esteemed economist and politician, Raymond Deonna, who played a prominent role as the head of the board at the former Journal de Genève, and his wife, Anne-Marie Vernet-Faesch. Despite leaving school before matriculating, she pursued her passion for the arts, attending art school in London. Deonna later returned to Geneva, where she immersed herself in the art world by working in a gallery. She had a brief marriage from 1961 to 1963.

Journalism Career

In 1967, Deonna received an invitation to report on the Six-Day War, sparking the beginning of her illustrious career as a journalist in the Middle East. She displayed a particular interest in the lives of Arab women, leading her to embark on a journey to capture the essence of their experiences through her writing and photography. Recognizing the enduring impact of books compared to newspapers, she published numerous detailed accounts of her extensive travels over four decades, often accompanied by her evocative photographs.

Deonna's works not only highlighted the lives of women but also emphasized her belief that many global challenges could be addressed through a dedicated pursuit of peace. In recognition of her tireless efforts and impactful storytelling, she was awarded the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education in 1987. Back in Switzerland, she staunchly advocated for the 1989 (unsuccessful) referendum to abolish the Swiss army, showcasing her commitment to peace and a strong feminist perspective that resonated in all her writings.

Legacy and Passing

Laurence Deonna's legacy remains a beacon of inspiration for aspiring journalists and advocates of peace. Her dedication to amplifying the voices of women and advocating for a more peaceful world leaves an enduring imprint on society.

Sadly, on 2 August 2023, Laurence Deonna passed away in Geneva at the age of 86. Her profound impact on journalism and advocacy continues to be celebrated and remembered by many.
