Sherry Combs Johnson (August 16, 1938 – August 2, 2023) was a renowned American barrel racer and a proud member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Her contributions to the sport of rodeo and her remarkable achievements in barrel racing have left an indelible mark on its history.
Early Life and Family
Sherry Combs Johnson, born Sherry Price on August 16, 1938, hailed from Duncan, Oklahoma. She was raised alongside her sister, Florence Youree, and they both inherited their father John Henry Price's love for horses and rodeo. Growing up on their father's ranch near Addington, Oklahoma, they worked tirelessly and passionately, deeply ingrained in the world of rodeo. Florence Youree, also a ProRodeo Hall of Famer, and Sherry were John Henry Price's cherished daughters, sharing his passion for the sport.
Sherry Combs Johnson's journey in rodeo was deeply influenced by her sister Florence, who became her inspiration and rodeo companion. Together, they rode, competed, and made significant strides in the rodeo community.
Rodeo Career
Sherry Combs Johnson's career was nothing short of extraordinary. She became a five-time ARJA barrel racing champion and a two-time ARJA all-around champion. Her prowess in barrel racing earned her accolades and recognition throughout her career.
In the inaugural National Finals Rodeo (NFR) held in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1962, Sherry Combs Johnson secured the World Barrel Racing Championship, a remarkable feat that showcased her exceptional skills and dedication to the sport.
