Early Life and Career
Mike Henderson was born in Independence, Missouri, in 1953. He found his calling in music early on and became an original member of the blues group the Bel Airs, formed in Missouri in 1981. The band released an album, Need Me a Car, on Blind Pig Records in 1984. However, Henderson left the band in 1985 to explore new avenues.
Move to Nashville and The Roosters
In 1986, after moving to Nashville, Henderson joined the roots rock band The Roosters. Shortly thereafter, he became part of a spin-off band, The Kingsnakes. This new ensemble started playing weekly gigs at the Bluebird Cafe in July 1986. Eventually, they were signed by Curb Records and shortened their name to The Snakes, releasing an album by the same name in 1989.
"Powerful Stuff" and Other Hits
One of Henderson's most popular songs, "Powerful Stuff," was covered by The Fabulous Thunderbirds for the soundtrack of the film Cocktail in 1988. This breakthrough led him to become a staff songwriter for EMI. Over the years, his compositions were recorded by renowned artists such as the Dixie Chicks, Trisha Yearwood, Gary Allan, and Patty Loveless.
A Skilled Slide Guitarist
In addition to his songwriting abilities, Henderson was an accomplished slide guitarist. He contributed his guitar skills to albums by various artists, including Emmylou Harris, John Hiatt, Joy Lynn White, and Kelly Willis.
