John Madigan: A Dual Sports Icon

John Madigan (1946 – 1 August 2023) was a celebrated Irish sportsman known for his contributions to both hurling and rugby union.


Hurling Journey

Madigan embarked on his sporting career as a hurler, showcasing his talent with the club Charleville. In 1970, he played a pivotal role in the club's junior team, securing the North Cork JHC title after a 25-year hiatus. Noteworthy performances continued, with Madigan clinching divisional titles in 1974 and 1986. His excellence on the field also earned him a spot in the esteemed Avondhu divisional team.


Rugby Union Career

Madigan's venture into rugby union commenced with Charleville RFC before he made a significant move to Ennis RFC while working with the P&T. Furthering his rugby journey, he joined the ranks of UL Bohemians, where he not only displayed exceptional skills but also held the prestigious position of club captain for several years. Madigan etched his name in rugby history in 1973 when he played for Munster against the formidable All Blacks, resulting in an exhilarating 3–3 draw. The subsequent year saw a reencounter with the All Blacks, where Madigan showcased his prowess in a hard-fought match, culminating in a 14–4 defeat. Madigan's commitment to rugby shone through as he was part of the UL Bohemians team that contested in the Munster Senior Cup final in 1980. Passing the torch of sporting legacy, his son, John Madigan Jnr, carried on the tradition by also making a mark in Munster.
