Élisabeth de Chimay: A Writer and Princess
Élisabeth de Chimay, originally named Martha Marie Élisabeth Antoine Manset, was a distinguished writer and princess with French and Belgian heritage. She was born on 20 March 1926 in Bordeaux. Her life encompassed not only her literary contributions but also her familial connections and efforts in preserving heritage.
Early Life and Family
Élisabeth de Chimay was the daughter of Octave Manset and Marie-Charlotte Guestier, both belonging to families involved in the wine business. Tragically, in 1939, her parents met with a fatal car accident. Subsequently, her brother Édouard passed away in 1940 during the tumultuous times of World War II.
On 18 December 1947, Élisabeth married Élie de Riquet, Prince de Chimay, a notable descendant of Pierre-Paul Riquet, the celebrated engineer credited for the construction of the Canal du Midi. Together, they were blessed with three children: Philippe (born 1948), Marie-Gilone (born 1950), and Alexandra (born 1952).
Literary and Cultural Pursuits
Apart from her role as a princess, Élisabeth de Chimay made significant contributions to the world of literature. She penned a notable work on Thérésa Tallien and also authored her autobiography, sharing her life's journey and experiences.
A close friend of Fabiola of Belgium, Élisabeth de Chimay delved into the heritage of the De Riquet de Caraman family and devoted herself to preserving the archives of the Chimay Castle. Furthermore, she orchestrated a Baroque music festival that ran from 1957 to 1980, showcasing her passion for culture and the arts.
Passing
On 2 August 2023, at the age of 97, Élisabeth de Chimay passed away in Chimay, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and influence both literary and cultural spheres.
