Delano Eugene Lewis: A Life of Service and Leadership

Delano Eugene Lewis (November 12, 1938 – August 2, 2023) was a notable American attorney, businessman, and diplomat. His contributions ranged from serving as the United States ambassador to South Africa to holding leadership roles at the Peace Corps and National Public Radio. Lewis's legacy also included being the father of the well-known actor, Phill Lewis.


Early Years and Education

Born on November 12, 1938, in Arkansas City, Kansas, Delano Eugene Lewis hailed from a family deeply entrenched in Democratic values. He was named after Franklin Delano Roosevelt, although his name was pronounced differently. Lewis was raised as the only child of Raymond Ernest Lewis, a Santa Fe Railroad porter, and Enna L. Lewis, a homemaker.


Lewis pursued his education at Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas, where he graduated in 1956. Post-graduation, he attended Boys State during his junior and senior years. He furthered his academic journey at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, and later attained a law degree from the Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas.


Career and Public Service

Delano Eugene Lewis embarked on a fruitful career that spanned various sectors. Beginning as an attorney in the U.S. Justice Department, he later transitioned to roles in the Peace Corps, working in Nigeria and Uganda. Lewis also made significant contributions in the telecommunications sector as the Chief Executive Officer of The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company.


In the realm of media, Lewis assumed the position of President and CEO at National Public Radio (NPR), leaving an indelible mark. His dedication to public service was further demonstrated when he was appointed by President Bill Clinton as the U.S. ambassador to South Africa in 1999.


Involvement in Community and Politics

Beyond his professional roles, Lewis was actively involved in advocating for Washington, D.C.'s home rule, a cause he passionately supported. Although he contemplated political office and was viewed as a prominent figure in Washington, D.C.'s political landscape, he chose not to pursue elected positions.


Personal Life and Passing

A proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Lewis was recognized with numerous civic awards throughout his lifetime. He and his wife, Gayle Carolyn Jones, shared a meaningful life, raising four sons, one of whom, Phill Lewis, gained fame as an actor.


On August 2, 2023, Delano Eugene Lewis passed away in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at the age of 84. His life was a testament to service, leadership, and the enduring impact one can make in the world.
